Governor Perdue Signs Bill for Kennesaw Wi-Fi

Published May 15, 2008

Governor Sonny Perdue put his stamp of approval on the City of Kennesaw’s wireless Internet service Wednesday as he signed House Bill 1430, which amends the City’s charter to allow provision of Internet services within the City as well as other matters pertaining to operation of the City’s Wi-Fi service.

The bill allows the City to “acquire, own, hold, lease, sell, resell, build, maintain, operate and contract for an Internet systems network in order to provide Internet services including but not limited to wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet service…”

It also gives the City the ability to defray costs of the Wi-Fi system by leasing, selling or sponsoring web space for advertisement purposes.

“We are constantly looking at new ways to provide useful services and amenities that will enhance the quality of life for our citizens,” said Mayor Mark Mathews. “The passage of this bill will allow us to continue to improve and expand Kennesaw’s Wi-Fi program; and the Governor’s approval of this bill further validates our efforts to provide what we believe is a wonderful amenity for the citizens of Kennesaw.”

Kennesaw officially kicked off its Wi-Fi system in March 2008, with Rep. Ed Setzler, one of the bill’s sponsors, as the first official user. Wireless Internet is now available at Swift-Cantrell Park, Adams Park, City Hall and the Historic Depot area.

The City is also currently working on a plan to help local business owners by allowing them to market directly on the City Wi-Fi. This is an opportunity for business owners to market to the community while helping Kennesaw Wi-Fi users learn about products and services available locally.
