Four Georgia Trails Highlighted on MapGuide

Published Mar 27, 2008

On Thursday, March 20th in Washington DC, representatives from North Georgia and the GA Dept of Economic Development and GA Dept of Community Affairs attended a reception at the National Geographic Society to launch a mapguide highlighting 28 trails throughout the 13 state-Appalachian Region. In partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission, this mapguide was created and developed along with a companion website, www.visitappalachia.com.

The mapguide was inserted in the April edition of National Geographic Traveler (national distribution). Additional copies can be found at Georgia Visitor Centers and at various sites along the four Georgia trails, the Southern Highroads Trail, Chieftains Trail, Lookout Mountain Parkway and the Folk Potter’s Trail.

The ARC’s Tourism Council hopes that the mapguide will encourage potential visitors to visit Appalachia and discover that the region is filled with a history of place and culture of people influenced by their natural surroundings, music, food, art, and craft. Thirty seven counties in North Georgia are located in Appalachia.

Each of the thirteen states provided a gift basket for the event which showcased the people, the food, the art and craft of Georgia’s Appalachia. The highlight of the Georgia Basket is a Cabbage Patch Premie Baby from Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland, Georgia. Original Appalachian Artworks, currently celebrating their 25th year is the epitome of the resourcefulness and creativity of the people of Appalachia.
