In an earlier era, steam engines struggled to ascend the six percent grade from Tryon, NC to the quaint town of Saluda. The descent was probably more harrowing, as there was the ever-present danger of a run away train down the mountain side.
Today Saluda no longer hears the haunting whistle of an approaching train, as locomotives bypass the grade entirely. But visitors can find evidence in many of the antique shops and old train station of this bygone era. An abundance of books, old post cards, photographs and carved wooden train whistles are among the many finds. Contemporary shops and galleries offer something for everyone.
When hunger overtakes shopping, you’ll find excellent menus at The Purple Onion and the Saluda Grade Cafe along historic main street. Just a short walk from there, your taste buds will be tempted with wonderful aromas from pit-cooked barbeque at Green River BBQ to fresh pastries and a light lunch at the Wildflour Bakery. And, don't miss a visit to the original hardware store and grocery.
When the steam train’s whistle indicated the approach to Saluda, the town turned out to watch and wave. Folks of all ages became children again, as they raced to put a penny on the tracks to take home a special souvenir. As the train’s giant metal wheels rolled over the coins they were flattened into unique treasures. Wonder if The Orchard Inn has a collection?
