Bill Cockerill Wins Award at World of Art Exhibition

Published Apr 29, 2008

Bill Cockerill won the Juror's Choice award at the South Cobb Arts Alliance "World of Art" Exhibition April 26 at the Mable House Cultural Arts Center. The juror was the nationally acclaimed artist Ernest Varner of Gallery 4463 in Acworth.

Bill Cockerill's winning piece is a turned and altered piece of porcelain he created on a marble pedestal. Inlaid in the bottom are rings of moss green and chocolate. The lid can be removed to become a functional vase as well as a sculptural piece. Bill, from Douglasville, is an accomplished artist, sculptor and framer at The Red Cockerill Gallery in Austell.

His other love is "Extreme Makeover", a home repair mission program at Calvin Center in Woolsey Ga. Bill takes groups of adults and kids to repair and rebuild homes of the low income elderly. It has been so rewarding watching as the homes are repaired, painted, and landscaped, the neighbors next to them begin taking more pride in their homes. They help each other and rebuild a community where once there was a slum. Church groups from all over the nation have come time and time again to make a difference in the lives of some very deserving people. They go back with a greater understanding of what life is like for the poverty stricken and the knowledge that they have personally helped to make there lives better.
