City of Kennesaw to Offer Science and Technology Classes for Youths

Published May 10, 2008

This summer, discover how the City of Kennesaw Parks & Recreation Department is motivating kids to think like scientists and engineers.

Explore motorized simple machines using LEGO® educational materials. Be a crime scene investigator and learn the laboratory end of CSI. Study specimens using a digital microscope. Even design and build a rocket... then launch it.

"We've teamed up with Computer Explorers to offer a variety of project-based, hands-on courses at the Ben Robertson Community Center," said David Pies, Recreation Programs Coordinator. "Computer Explorers is a recognized expert in children's computer and technology education, and we have an opportunity to inspire today’s kids to become tomorrow's scientific leaders."

Courses include Elementary Engineering and The Microscopic World for ages 6-8, Rocketeering for ages 6-8 and 9-12, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for ages 9-12. Each course is designed to simplify the complex world of educational technology by connecting math, science, reasoning, language arts and critical thinking. Kids will explore robotics, engineering and other cutting-edge technology tools.

Instructors will introduce students to a progressive curriculum that begins with foundational skills that rapidly lead to advanced knowledge, exploring and developing new ideas, and creating hands-on projects. The setting is educational, and the learning is fun.

And the fun won't end this summer. Computer Explorers will be back this fall to offer additional courses. The Ben Robertson Community Center is located at 2753 Watts Drive in Kennesaw, near the entrance to Adams Park. Visit www.kennesaw-ga.gov/pkrec to register for courses online, or call the City of Kennesaw Parks & Recreation Department at (770) 422-9714 for more information.
