Cobb County Library Offers Variety of Summer Events

July 18, 11 a.m., Discover Dragonflies: The Cobb County Water System Department will present Discover Dragonflies. Learn about the exciting world of these predatory ‘flying needles’ and how they help humans!  The story for this event will be ‘Eliza and the Dragonfly’ by Susie Caldwell-Rinehart and Anisa Claire Hovemann. Participants will then look at preserved dragonfly nymphs and create a dragonfly to take home. The event is for children four and older. No registration is required. 

July 24, 11 a.m., Can You Dig It: The Root House presents archeology for kids! Come and find out what life was like in 1850. The event is for children four and older. No registration is required. 

August 9, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Big Bug Bash: The Cobb County Public Libraries’ Big Bug Bash will be held Aug. 9, 10 a.m.–noon at the Central Cobb County Public Library. The event is for children ages 11 and younger, and it is free and open to the public. The children’s Big Bug Bash social is the culmination of the summer-long reading program, Catch the Reading Bug. Attendees can sit in on events at the party including storytelling, puppet shows, hands-on craft demonstrations and several other activities.

August 19, 7 p.m., Book Discussion: A book discussion on the ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’ by Susan Vreeland will take place August 19, 7 p.m. at the Central Cobb County Public Library. The author, Vreeland, will join the discussion by phone and answer questions from participants. Geared for adults, book club meetings are free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

July 24, 10 a.m., Puppeteer: Puppeteer Norma Hornack and her puppet troupe, ‘Norma’s Neighbors,’ will present folktales for children of all ages. No registration is required.

July 17, 10 a.m., Cobb County Humane Society: Patty Johnston from Cobb County Humane Society will present a program titled, ‘Taking Care of Pets,’ open to children of all ages. No registration is required.

July 24, 11 a.m., Cobb County Parks & Recreation: Kaye Wilson and her associates from Cobb County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs will present ‘Helpful Insects.’  Wilson will read ‘The Grouchy Ladybug’ by Eric Carle. Wilson’s demonstration will be on earthworms, which function as natural irrigation systems. During the event, children can hold the worms and use magnifying lenses to observe the insects.

July 31, 10 a.m., Art Station-Big Shanty: Michelle Kantartzis will facilitate two projects on behalf of The Art Station- Big Shanty. The first project is the ‘Bussing Bugs Paper Plate Craft.’ The children will mix and match all the bug templates and paint their paper plate to represent flowers. In another craft project, ‘Bug Pencil Toppers,’ children will choose a spider, bumble bee or lady bug for his or her pencil top. Participants then coil pipe cleaners to resemble garden bugs of their choice. All materials are provided. No registration is required.  The event is for children ages four and older.

July 23, 3:30 p.m., Ewww, Worms: The Cobb County Parks and Recreation Department presents ‘Ewww, Worms!’ The event informs children how worms and other insects are helpful to the environment. Speakers include a bug pledge to be respectful to all creatures. The event is for children ages four and older. No registration is required.

July 30, 3:30 p.m., From Seeds to Supper: The Cobb County 4-H club presents, ‘From Seeds to Supper,’ an interactive program for children ages five to 10. The 4-H speakers will talk about the life cycle of a plant and then help children plant seeds to take home. The event is for children four and older, and no registration required.

This is a great hands-on opportunity for pre-school through elementary school children. This program is for children four and older. No registration is required.

July 19, 10 a.m., Storyteller: Eenee Ferrano is a storyteller and musician whose puppets, props and instruments captivate children of all ages. Registration is required.

July 30, 10:30 a.m., Author visit: Author of the award-winning ‘Phoebe Clappsaddle and the Tumbleweed Gang’ series, Melanie Chrismer, will tell stories and provide roping demonstrations. (‘Phoebe Clappsaddle’ is about a young girl who is raised as a Southwestern belle, a genteel gal, a great horseback rider and roper). Chrismer is also known for her space and science books including ‘Highlights from the Hubble Telescope.’ No registration is required.
