"There Is no such thing as natural beauty" at Theatre On Main.  Steel Magnolias serves up a slice of life in Louisiana that's as warm and comforting as sweet potato pie. In the haven of Truvy's beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets and bare their souls, throwing in a little neighborly gossip for good measure.  Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (Aliya Hutcheson), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (Holli Majors) dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's elite: the cranky spinster Ouiser (Elaine Bishop), the football-loving gossiper Clairee (Ginny Slifcak), the controlling mother M'Lynn (Carolyn Choe), and her diabetic daughter, Shelby (Jessie Bishop), whose marriage, motherhood, and death frame the story.  From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they weather every event in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coifed hair.

It's a comedy that will keep even those who have seen the movie laughing.  With humorous lines such as "I bet he's the kind of gentleman who will take the dishes out of the sink before he pees in it," or M'Lynn's description of the pink color scheme her daughter chose for the wedding sanctuary, "It looks like someone has hosed it down with Pepto Bismol," it's hard to not chuckle even if you've heard the lines before.  No group of women could keep up the comedic pace of one-liners that these women do, but that's what makes it so fun to watch and hear.

The actresses said the small group has formed its own bonds in real life, due to the emotional intensity of some of the scenes; especially the final scene, which runs the gamut from tears to laughter.

And, as Truvy says, "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion."
