The Marietta-Roswell Alumnae Chapter (MRAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. cordially invites the public to celebrate Women’s History Month! In commemoration of the national theme, Generations of Women Moving History Forward, three African American pioneers of Song and Opera will be saluted in a production entitled, “Portraits: The First Black American Divas of Song and Opera.” This innovative theatrical production, written by Dina Cancryn, will be presented at Turner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Saturday, March 29 at 5:00pm. The general admission price is $30.00 and $20.00 for all students.
Celebrating twenty-two years of community service to Cobb, North Fulton, Paulding, and Cherokee counties, MRAC, last year, held its inaugural, An Affair With The Arts, an event saluting all forms of the arts and this year’s production promises to be breathtaking. Long before black "divas", such as Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston arrived on the scene, there were Distinguished, Innovative, Vibrant, African-American Singers (D.I.V.A.S.), such as Elizabeth Taylor-Greenfield, Sissieretta Jones and Marian Anderson, who braved racial hatred and risked life and limb to let their music speak for itself. Join us to commemorate these trailblazers.
Locally, since 1986, MRAC has awarded over $160,000 in scholarship awards and over $200,000 in in-kind contributions to needy families, the homeless, battered women and children. Nationally, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.
The Chapter looks forward to celebrating the wisdom and tenacity of women…recognizing the power and impact of trailblazers. History will come to life as three of the first great classical singers of color, share the stories and music of their lives in this exciting production.
