Turner Classic Movies, headquartered in Atlanta, recently made a donation of seven pieces of original art from its personal collection to the Friends of The Strand, Inc. in Marietta, GA for its renovation of The Strand Theatre.
“TCM is proud to donate this stunning artwork to The Strand, a historic theater with deep ties to the community,” said Tanya Coventry-Strader, vice president of brand development for TCM. “These memorable images from such classics as Grand Hotel, The Petrified Forest and Woman of the Year will be a perfect addition to The Strand’s beautiful new atrium. This is one of the many ways TCM is able to bring a touch of Hollywood to a new generation of movie lovers.”
The 200-pound art pieces range in size from 5’ x 7’ to 7’ x 9’ – they are large-as-life photographs set into custom steel frames by Scott Strader, a metal sculptor in Atlanta who grew up in Marietta. The photographs are from classic movie scenes and sets and depict images such as Mickey Rooney & Shirley Temple dancing.
“We plan to hang these unique art pieces in the lobby of The Strand, as well as one of our event rooms,” said Christy Rosell, director of business development & marketing for The Strand. “The pieces are truly one-of-a-kind and Turner’s timing was unbelievable! We couldn’t have dreamed up better art for The Strand’s walls.”
The Friends of the Strand, Inc. formed to restore the 1935 Art Deco Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square, provide a range of entertainment, including showing films, concerts, stage activities, and featuring two banquet facilities, one with access to a roof terrace.
