Southern Outdoor Cinema is proud to present its recipe for a five-star entertainment success: mix the excitement of a big screen movie with the thrill of the great outdoors; add a dash of carnival delight; and place it in a flat, open area. Then relax and enjoy a few hours of fun.
The new outdoor cinema production company is whipping up this recipe all over Atlanta and the Southeast, as the Alpharetta-based business takes its giant portable movie screen almost anywhere crowds can gather. Southern Outdoor Cinema projects everything from Hollywood blockbusters to arty independent films on a two-and-a-half story inflatable screen. With 5000 lumens and a 3000-watt sound system, up to 1000 people can enjoy films under the stars the way generations of drive-in moviegoers have done. Southern Outdoor Cinema also offers an inflatable slide for rent, which can turn an ordinary movie screening into a fun, family outing.
Paul Murray, a Forsyth County resident, came up with the idea for Southern Outdoor Cinema last year when he was looking for fun things to do with his family.
"We wanted to find something outdoors that people of all ages could enjoy," Murray says. "Drive-in movies were a logical choice, but there are so few of them these days. With our portable, high-quality screen, sound system and slide, we can bring that fun to parks, churches, neighborhoods, schools and businesses."
"Most people are in awe the first time they see an audio-charged, crystal-clear presentation on our inflatable screen," Murray says. "The picture quality and mobile equipment let us show family favorites from town-to-town or screen multi-day film festivals anywhere in the Southeast."
The inflatable movie screen can be set up and torn down in the same day. All that is needed for set up is a flat, 25 x 70-foot area that is clear of overhead power lines or trees. The height of the screen is tall enough to prevent audience members from blocking others' view of the movie.
This summer, Southern Outdoor Cinema began a series of free movie events in parks throughout Georgia, appropriately titled "Movies in the Park." Murray talked with six counties about using their parks, then found local sponsors to cover the costs of hosting 16 movie events in those communities. The response has been tremendous, as hundreds of friends and neighbors have gathered at each event to enjoy family movies on warm summer nights.
