Kennesaw’s Community Development Department, in conjunction with the International Code Council (ICC) Foundation, is observing Building Safety Week, May 5-11, 2008.

To celebrate Building Safety Week, the public is invited to visit the Kennesaw Building Services office at City Hall from 8 a.m. to – 5 p.m. during the week of May 5-11 to receive helpful information on building safety. Also, you can meet the building services staff at an open house on May 7 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Building codes and regulations have protected the public for thousands of years. Today, most cities and counties, including the City of Kennesaw, adopt and enforce international codes developed to guide the safe construction of buildings.

Building Safety Week raises public awareness of building safety by promoting the use, enforcement and understanding of building safety and fire prevention codes. Building Safety Week was first observed in 1980, and is sponsored by the ICC Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting ideas, methods and technologies that encourage construction of durable, sustainable buildings and homes.

“Building and code officials are here to help the public understand building safety issues,” said Kennesaw Building Official Mark Rice. “Building Safety Week recognizes the professionals who make sure the buildings in our community are safe.”

The open house on May 7 will include light refreshments and a short public service announcement video will be shown. For more information, contact Jammie Newsome, Permit and Inspections Coordinator, at (770) 429-4554 or jnewsome@kennesaw-ga.gov.
