Harris Tennis Center Honored as Organization of the Year

Published Oct 20, 2007

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Georgia has named Cobb County's Harrison Tennis Center as its Member Organization of the Year for 2007. Harrison staff received the award at a luncheon held recently at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center. This award recognizes the outstanding services rendered to a USTA member organization in Georgia. Selection was made on the basis of service to the tennis community, service to the organization's members and service to the game of tennis.

Harrison Tennis Center, located in northeast Cobb on Shallowford Road, is Cobb’s largest public facility with 16 courts. It is also one of the busiest tennis facilities in the state, with numerous instructional programs, tournaments and league play. Harrison was selected as one of eight sites in the country to serve as a prototype facility for the new 36/60 program, a program that teaches young children (ages 4-8) tennis on mini-tennis courts using sponge-like tennis balls. Harrison hosts more league teams than any other facility in the Atlanta area, with 277 ALTA and USTA teams participating this past year. Harrison also hosts seven USTA sanctioned tournaments, including the USTA National 16’s Open and two state championships.

This is the third time in the past six years a Cobb tennis facility has received the award. Lost Mountain Tennis Center received the award in 2004 and Harrison in 2002. Harrison was also awarded the USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 2004. As the Georgia recipient of this award, Harrison Tennis Center will be the Georgia representative for the Southern and national Member Organization of the Year awards.
